The Babinski reflex helps develop the nervous system for movement: crawling, walking, and running.  Because of its connection to the vestibular system, it plays an important role in the development of balance, coordination, speech development and higher-level cognitive skills.  The reflex occurs in babies because the corticospinal pathways are not fully myelinated.  The Babinski prepars the baby for crawling, standing, walking, and running.  It is also important in the development of muscle tone in the lower part of the body  (Brandes, 2012).  Those with an active babinski can be seen standing on the sides of their feet and wear out the outsides of their shoes.  Those with an undeveloped Babinski may wear out the inside of their shoes.  Individuals with an unintegrated Babinski tend to feel ungrounded.

Crawling in place
Logitudinal Rocking:
For the purpose of integrating this reflex, focus on doing the rocking from the toes without the support of the hands.

Additional activities to integrate

Walking barefoot outside and on different surfaces.

Using a surgical brush and other textures to give input to the feet and help desensitize the feet.  If the child cannot stand to have his feet touched, then simply hold the foot and allow him to breathe and integrate the sensation of it being touched.  Over time more and more input can be given to the foot.
